Doran played 12 seasons in the Major Leagues (1982–1993), primarily for the Houston Astros, with later stints for the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers.
Doran was the heart of the Astros’ infield for nearly a decade (1982–1990). His best season came in 1986, when he hit .276 with career highs in home runs (11) and RBIs (79), helping lead Houston to the National League West title. As a switch-hitter, he provided tactical flexibility. He was known for a disciplined eye at the plate, often finishing seasons with nearly as many walks as strikeouts.
He was consistently among the league leaders in fielding percentage and double plays turned. In 1987, he won the Silver Slugger Award for National League second basemen.
After being traded to Cincinnati in 1990, he missed the Reds’ World Series run due to a late-season injury, though he remained a veteran presence in the clubhouse.
After retiring as a player, Doran remained in the game for years as a coach and minor league instructor, notably serving as the bench coach for the Cincinnati Reds.
