Selected in the 11th round of the 1983 MLB Draft out of the University of Houston by the Chicago White Sox, Douglas Dean “Doug” Drabek was one of the National League’s premier starting pitchers during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Acquired by the Pittsburgh Pirates from the New York Yankees in a historic November 1986 trade for Rick Rhoden, Drabek became the unquestioned rotation ace for Pittsburgh’s three consecutive NL East championship teams (1990–1992). Armed with a sharp-breaking curveball, a pinpoint cutter, and a heavy sinking fastball, he spent 13 Major League seasons (1986–1998) with the Yankees, Pirates, Astros, White Sox, and Orioles, racking up 155 career victories.
Drabek’s defining stretch came in Pittsburgh, where he anchored Leyland’s rotation and earned the ultimate pitching honor.
Postseason Workhorse: Pitched brilliantly in the NLCS for Pittsburgh, posting a 2.80 ERA over five postseason starts (45.0 IP), including a masterpiece in Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS against Atlanta before the bullpen collapsed in the 9th inning.
1994 All-Star Season: Earned his sole MLB All-Star selection following a move to his hometown Houston Astros, going 12–6 with a 2.84 ERA during the strike-shortened 1994 season.
