Matthew “Matt” Williams was a right-handed third baseman who had a 17-season career in Major League Baseball (MLB). He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the first round of the 1986 MLB draft.
Williams played for the San Francisco Giants (1987-1996), Cleveland Indians (1997), and Arizona Diamondbacks (1998-2003). He was a five-time All-Star, won four Gold Glove Awards, and four Silver Slugger Awards. He was also a member of the 2001 World Series Champion Arizona Diamondbacks. In the strike-shortened 1994 season, he led the majors with 43 home runs.
After retiring as a player, Williams became a manager and coach. He managed the Washington Nationals from 2014 to 2015 and was named NL Manager of the Year in 2014. He has also served as a third base coach for several teams, including the Diamondbacks, Athletics, Padres, and Giants.
