Gary Varsho is a quintessential “baseball lifer”—someone who carved out a respectable professional career as a player and then spent decades dedicated to the game as a coach, manager, and scout.

Gary played eight seasons in the Major Leagues (1988–1995). While he wasn’t a superstar, he was the kind of reliable, fundamentally sound player that managers love to have on their bench.

He played for several teams including Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, and Philadelphia Phillies. He was a versatile utility player, primarily an outfielder but capable of handling infield duties. He was particularly known for his prowess as a pinch-hitter—most notably leading the National League in pinch-hitting average during his 1988 rookie season with the Cubs.

Varsho was a part of the Pittsburgh Pirates teams that made back-to-back National League Championship Series appearances in 1991 and 1992.

After hanging up his spikes, Varsho didn’t leave the game. He moved into the dugout, where he became a well-regarded bench coach and manager throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

The name “Varsho” is now firmly cemented in current MLB headlines thanks to his son, Daulton Varsho, who is a standout defensive outfielder and catcher for the Toronto Blue Jays.
