Before he was in the dugout with a headset, Girardi was one of the premier defensive catchers of the 1990s. In Game 6 of the 1996 World Series, Girardi hit a legendary RBI triple off Greg Maddux. It’s one of the most iconic hits in Yankees history, helping clinch their first title in 18 years.
Girardi was behind the plate for two of the most famous pitching performances of the era: Dwight Gooden’s no-hitter (1996) and David Cone’s perfect game (1999).
He is widely credited with mentoring a young Jorge Posada, gracefully transitioning from the starting role to a backup/mentor role as the “Core Four” era began.
Girardi’s managerial career is a study in high-pressure success. He is one of the few people to win a World Series as both a player and a manager for the Yankees.
