Wetteland’s career peak came in 1996 with the New York Yankees. That year, he led the American League with 43 saves, but it was his postseason performance that made history. He recorded a save in all four Yankee victories against the Atlanta Braves. He became one of the few relief pitchers to win the World Series MVP award.
Ironically, his dominance allowed the Yankees to groom a young Mariano Rivera in a setup role. After Wetteland left for free agency following the 1996 season, Rivera took over the closer role and never looked back.
Though often remembered as a Yankee, Wetteland was a journeyman who excelled everywhere he landed.
- Montreal Expos (1992–1994): This is where he truly became an elite closer, anchoring one of the best (and most “what-if”) teams in baseball history during the strike-shortened 1994 season.
- Texas Rangers (1997–2000): After leaving New York, he signed a massive contract with Texas. He remains the Rangers’ all-time saves leader (150) and was inducted into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame in 2005.
- The Dodgers Connection: He actually started his career as a starter for the Los Angeles Dodgers before realizing his high-octane fastball and hard-nosed mentality were better suited for the 9th inning.
He officially retired after the 2000 season at the relatively young age of 34, leaving the game while he was still effectively a top-tier reliever.
