Moisés Alou is a former professional baseball outfielder who played in Major League Baseball for 17 seasons from 1990 to 2008. A six-time All-Star and a key member of the 1997 World Series champion Florida Marlins, he was known for his offensive abilities and for being part of a prominent baseball family.
Moisés Alou is the son of Felipe Alou, a former MLB outfielder and manager. He is also the nephew of former MLB players Matty and Jesús Alou. His brother, Luis Rojas, is a former MLB manager. Moisés played under his father while with the Montreal Expos.
After a brief stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Alou was traded to the Expos. A serious shoulder injury cost him the entire 1991 season, but he bounced back and became a star for the Expos, earning his first All-Star selection in 1994. Alou signed with the Marlins as a free agent and was a critical part of their World Series-winning team in 1997. He led the team in home runs and RBIs and was a major offensive force throughout the postseason.
Houston Astros (1998, 2000–2001): Alou had a monster year in 1998, hitting a career-high 38 home runs and driving in 124 runs. However, a torn ACL in a treadmill accident forced him to miss the entire 1999 season.
While with the Cubs, Alou was famously involved in the “Steve Bartman incident” during the 2003 NLCS, where a fan interfered with a foul ball he was attempting to catch. He went on to play for the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets before retiring in 2008.
