In 1990, Maas set a then-Major League record by hitting his first 10 home runs in just 72 at-bats. He was the fastest player to reach the 10, 13, and 15 home run milestones at the start of a career.
Maas was a tall, left-handed power hitter with a sweet swing—basically the prototype for a Yankee Stadium home run machine. “Maas-mania” was real. Upper deck signs, constant media coverage, and the belief that he was the next Lou Gehrig or Don Mattingly. He finished the 1990 season with 21 home runs in just 79 games, finishing second in the Rookie of the Year voting.
As quickly as he rose, the league seemed to “solve” him. Pitchers stopped feeding him the high fastballs he loved and started painting the outside corner with breaking balls. By 1992 and 1993, his playing time evaporated as his production stalled. He spent some time with the Twins and even played a stint in Japan with the Yokohama BayStars before retiring.
Maas is often cited as a cautionary tale about the “small sample size” in baseball, but he transitioned incredibly well into his post-baseball life. He went into financial consulting and has had a very successful career as a financial advisor.
