Drafted in the 2nd round of the 1986 MLB June Draft out of Central Michigan University by the Chicago Cubs, Kevin Ray Tapani was one of the most dependable, surgical right-handed starting pitchers of the 1990s.
Traded to the Minnesota Twins in the landmark 1989 Frank Viola deal, Tapani quickly established himself as a frontline starter alongside Jack Morris and Scott Erickson. Equipped with a sinking fastball, sharp split-finger pitch, and pinpoint command, Tapani logged 13 Major League seasons (1989–2001) with the Mets, Twins, Dodgers, White Sox, and Cubs, compiling 143 career wins and a 4.07 ERA across 2,256 innings pitched.
Tapani’s career was defined by his clutch performance during Minnesota’s historic 1991 World Series Championship run.
1991 Masterpiece Season: Turned in his finest career campaign, going 16–9 with a 2.99 ERA, 135 strikeouts, and 2.1 walks per nine innings across 244 innings, finishing 7th in AL Cy Young Award voting.
World Series Clutch Performance: Pitched brilliantly in Game 2 of the 1991 World Series against Atlanta, throwing 8.0 innings of 2-run ball to secure a 3–2 Minnesota victory.
1998 Wrigley Field Resurgence: Re-emerged as a 19-game winner for the Chicago Cubs in 1998, posting a 19–9 record with a 4.24 ERA to help lead the Cubs to the NL Wild Card spot.
