Fryman’s career can be divided into two main chapters: his rise in Detroit and his veteran leadership in Cleveland.
Detroit Tigers (1990–1997): Drafted in the first round in 1987, Fryman was groomed to succeed legendary shortstop Alan Trammell. He debuted in 1990 and quickly became a bright spot for the team. In 1992, he earned his first All-Star nod and a Silver Slugger Award at shortstop. By 1994, he moved permanently to third base, where he became an anchor for the Tigers’ lineup.
Cleveland Indians (1998–2002): Following a brief (two-week) stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks after a trade, he was flipped to Cleveland in exchange for Matt Williams. In Cleveland, Fryman joined a perennial contender. His defensive work at the “hot corner” reached its peak here, culminating in a Gold Glove Award in 2000.
Fryman was selected as an All-Star 5 times, 5 (1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 2000) and awarded a Gold Glove (2000) and Silver Slugger (1992).
Since retiring in 2002, Fryman has remained deeply involved with the Cleveland organization. He managed the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (a minor league affiliate) for several seasons and currently serves as a hitting instructor and player development consultant for the Cleveland Guardians. He is also active on the board of directors for the Baseball Chapel, reflecting his long-standing commitment to his faith.
