Overview of 1991 Ultra Baseball Cards
The 1991 Ultra baseball card set holds a significant place in the history of sports card collecting as it was Fleer’s first foray into the “premium” card market. Released at the height of the “junk wax era,” these cards were an attempt to offer a higher-quality product compared to standard issues.
Premium Quality: The cards were produced on a noticeably thicker, higher-quality card stock than Fleer’s regular 1991 set. They also featured a silver-ink design, a trend that was started by Donruss’s Leaf brand the previous year.
Design: The cards have a clean and crisp design with full-color action photos on the front. The borders on the left and right are “borderless,” while the top and bottom have silver and white accents. The back of the cards are also well-designed, featuring three full-color photos and player statistics.
Set Size: The base set consists of 400 cards.
Distribution: The cards were sold in foil-wrapped packs. Fleer claimed that the production run for Ultra was only about 15% of their regular 1991 Fleer set, but they are still very plentiful today due to the overall overproduction of cards during this era.
Subsets: The set includes a couple of notable subsets.

Major League Prospects: (Cards 373-390)
Elite Performance / Great Performances: (Cards 391-396)
Key Rookie Cards: The base set lacks a true marquee rookie card, its the update set that holds most of the key rookies from 1991. Eric Karros is one notable rookie from the base set.
The 1991 Ultra Update Set: Later in the year, Fleer released an “Update” set for the 1991 Ultra line, which was sold exclusively as a factory set. This 120-card set is highly significant for collectors because it contains the true rookie cards for several Hall of Fame players and key stars, most notably:
