While he had a long and productive career, Lowe is immortalized in Boston for his role in the 2004 World Series run. He achieved a feat that may never be repeated: he was the winning pitcher in the clinching game of all three postseason series (the ALDS, the ALCS, and the World Series).
Lowe’s 17-year career was defined by a heavy sinker that produced endless ground balls. He joins John Smoltz and Dennis Eckersley as one of only three pitchers to record 160+ wins and 80+ saves.
In 2000, Lowe was the American League’s premier closer with 42 saves. By 2002, the Red Sox moved him to the rotation, where he immediately became an ace. He won 21 games that year, finished 3rd in Cy Young voting, and threw a no-hitter against the Devil Rays. Derek Lowe is the first player in MLB history to start an All-Star Game (2002) after having previously appeared in one as a closer (2000).
After leaving Boston, Lowe remained a consistent front-line starter. He led the National League in wins with 16 for the Dodgers in 2006 and continued as a reliable veteran for the Braves through 2011.
