Hampton is arguably the greatest hitting pitcher of the modern era. He didn’t just “help himself” at the plate; he was a legitimate offensive threat.

He won five consecutive Silver Slugger Awards (1999–2003). To put that in perspective, he won the award with four different teams (Astros, Mets, Rockies, and Braves). Hampton finished his career with a .246 batting average, 16 home runs, and 79 RBIs. His career OPS of .650 was better than many utility infielders of his time.

In December 2000, Hampton signed an 8-year, $121 million contract with the Colorado Rockies. At the time, it was the largest contract in MLB history (though Alex Rodriguez broke that record just days later). Like many pitchers before him, Hampton struggled in the thin air of Coors Field. His ERA ballooned to 5.41 in his first year and 6.15 in his second. The Rockies traded him to the Braves after just two seasons.

After retiring in 2010, Hampton moved into coaching and has served as a pitching coach and manager at various levels, including a stint as the bullpen coach for the Seattle Mariners.
