Signed as an international amateur free agent by the New York Mets in 1988 out of Santa Teresa, Venezuela, Edgardo Antonio Alfonzo (“Fonzie”) was one of the most clutch, polished, and fan-favorite infielders in franchise history.
Known for his calm demeanor, elite bat control, high baseball IQ, and flawless defensive versatility (thriving at both third base and second base), Alfonzo played 12 Major League seasons (1995–2006) with the Mets, Giants, Angels, and Blue Jays. Over 1,506 career games, he compiled 1,532 hits, 146 home runs, 744 RBIs, a Silver Slugger Award, an All-Star nod, and legendary postseason performances.
Alfonzo anchored the legendary “Best Infield Ever” alongside Robin Ventura, Rey Ordóñez, and John Olerud on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1999, serving as the heartbeat of New York’s middle-of-the-order.
1999 NL Wild Card & Postseason Barrage: Delivered an all-time great offensive season, batting .304 with 27 home runs, 41 doubles, and 108 RBIs, while scoring 123 runs. He carried that momentum into October, launching a historic grand slam in Game 1 of the NLDS against Arizona and hitting two home runs in Game 1 of the NLCS against Atlanta.
1999 Historic 6-for-6 Performance: On August 30, 1999, against Houston, Alfonzo went a perfect 6-for-6 with 3 home runs, 5 runs scored, and 5 RBIs—one of the single greatest individual regular-season games in Mets history.
2000 NL Pennant Run: Earned his first NL All-Star selection and won the NL Silver Slugger Award at second base, hitting .298 with 25 home runs and 94 RBIs to propel the Mets to the 2000 World Series against the Yankees.
Inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame in 2020.
