In 1994, Michael Jordan shocked the world by retiring from the NBA at the peak of his career to pursue a lifelong dream of playing professional baseball. He signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox, a team also owned by his boss, Jerry Reinsdorf.

Jordan was assigned to the Birmingham Barons, the Double-A affiliate of the White Sox. This was not a publicity stunt in Jordan’s mind; he was serious about the endeavor and dedicated himself to the game. Under the management of future MLB manager Terry Francona, Jordan committed to the rigorous schedule of minor league baseball.

His season with the Barons became one of the most talked-about stories in sports. Crowds flocked to see him play, and the Barons’ attendance skyrocketed. He wore jersey number 45, the same number he wore in high school.

While his time on the diamond wasn’t as dominant as his basketball career, Jordan’s performance was respectable given his long time away from the sport. Jordan showed flashes of his athleticism on the baseball field, particularly with his speed, as evidenced by his 30 stolen bases. He also demonstrated a strong work ethic, often being the first to arrive and the last to leave practice.

Following the Barons’ season, Jordan played in the Arizona Fall League for the Scottsdale Scorpions. He showed improvement, batting .252 in 120 at-bats.

His baseball career was cut short by the 1994-95 MLB strike. Unwilling to cross the picket line, Jordan decided to retire from baseball and return to the NBA, where he would go on to win three more championships with the Chicago Bulls.
