One of the most electric, enigmatic, and resilient left-handed pitchers of his generation, Francisco Liriano left a legacy defined by an unhittable peak, signature achievements, and an impressive capacity for reinvention. Originally signed by the San Francisco Giants out of the Dominican Republic, Liriano became a frontline phenom for the Minnesota Twins before evolving into a trusted veteran across a 14-year Major League career.

When Liriano burst onto the scene full-time in 2006, he formed a devastating “M&M Boys” pitching tandem with Johan Santana, featuring what many scouts considered the single best slider in baseball.

  • The Unstoppable 2006 Debut: Before a mid-season elbow injury cut his campaign short, Liriano blew through the American League, posting a microscopic 2.16 ERA with 144 strikeouts in just 121 innings. He made the All-Star team as a 22-year-old rookie and looked destined for perennial Cy Young contention.

  • The No-Hitter: On May 3, 2011, pitching for the Twins against the Chicago White Sox, Liriano threw a memorable no-hitter. In classic Liriano fashion, it was a high-wire act of raw stuff overcoming a lack of command—he walked six batters and struck out two, throwing 123 pitches to secure the milestone.

  • The Master of Reinvention: Liriano remains the only pitcher in MLB history to win the Comeback Player of the Year Award in both leagues. He won it in the American League with Minnesota in 2010 (going 14-10 with a 3.62 ERA and 201 strikeouts after recovering from Tommy John surgery), and again in the National League with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2013 (going 16-8 with a 3.02 ERA).
