Joe Mauer is one of the most celebrated and decorated players in modern baseball history, spending his entire 15-year career with his hometown team, the Minnesota Twins. He is widely considered one of the greatest offensive catchers of all time.
Selected 1st overall by the Twins in the 2001 MLB Draft out of Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, Minnesota. He famously turned down a scholarship to play football at Florida State University to sign with the Twins.
Mauer’s prime was defined by an elite blend of contact hitting, high on-base percentage, and Gold Glove defense behind the plate. He has a large list of awards and achievements including:
- AL MVP (2009): A nearly unanimous winner after one of the greatest seasons ever by a catcher.
- 6× MLB All-Star: (2006, 2008–2010, 2012, 2013)
- 3× AL Batting Champion: (2006, 2008, 2009)
- He is the only catcher in American League history to win a batting title, and he did it three times.
- 3× Gold Glove Award: (Catcher: 2008–2010)
- 5× Silver Slugger Award: (2006, 2008–2010, 2013)
He became the first catcher in MLB history to lead the league in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage in a single season.
Due to a significant concussion late in the 2013 season, Mauer transitioned from his physically demanding role as a catcher to a full-time first baseman for the final five seasons of his career (2014-2018).
His No. 7 jersey was retired by the Twins. Mauer was inducted on the first ballot to the National Baseball Hall of Fame (2024).

Did You Know? While Mauer had already secured two batting titles, his 2009 regular-season campaign was a majestic offensive display that put him in a completely separate class. Despite missing the entire month of April while recovering from a back injury, he hit the ground running with an unprecedented surge of power.
Mauer put together a historic season, leading the major leagues with a blistering .365 batting average, a .444 on-base percentage, and a .587 slugging mark to register a massive 1.031 OPS. He unlocked new pull-side leverage to launch a career-high 28 home runs and drive in 96 runs. His complete offensive dominance carried the Twins to an AL Central division crown and earned him a near-unanimous 2009 American League MVP Award, solidifying his peak as one of the greatest individual years ever put forward by a catcher.
