The face of the New York Mets throughout the 2000s and 2010s, David Wright earned the title “Captain America” for his legendary leadership, defensive excellence, and clutch home runs on the international stage. Selected 38th overall by the Mets in the 2001 MLB Draft out of high school, Wright grew into an elite, multi-time All-Star third baseman and the fourth official captain in franchise history. Though his peak was tragically cut short by spinal stenosis and severe injuries, his impact at the hot corner solidified him as one of the most beloved figures in New York sports history.
At his absolute peak, Wright was a premier five-tool infielder who consistently hit for average, drove the ball out of the park, and played stellar defense.
- The 30-30 Club: In 2007, Wright turned in one of the greatest individual seasons in Mets history, posting a .325/.416/.546 slash line with 30 home runs and 34 stolen bases, winning both a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger.
- Captain America: He earned his famous nickname during the 2013 World Baseball Classic, where he hit a legendary, dramatic grand slam against Italy and drove in a tournament-high 10 runs for Team USA.
- Franchise Leaderboards: Wright retired as the Mets’ all-time franchise leader in hits (1,777), RBIs (970), runs scored (949), doubles (390), and total bases (2,945).
