Robert Clayton “Bobby” Shantz is one of the most remarkable, resilient left-handed pitchers of the post-war era. Standing just 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing barely 140 pounds, Shantz defied every conventional scouting mold to become an American League MVP and an elite, historically dominant defender.
Signed by the Philadelphia Athletics in 1948, Shantz paired a deceptive curveball and a high-velocity knuckler with surgical precision. His career reached its absolute zenith during a spectacular 1952 season on a lackluster Athletics squad.
The Statline: Shantz put up an incredible 24–7 record with a stingy 2.48 ERA, leading the American League in wins and win percentage (.774) while throwing 279.2 innings.
The Feat: He tossed 26 complete games that season, carrying a deeply mediocre Philly team on his back to secure the 1952 AL MVP Award ahead of legendary hitters like Allie Reynolds and Mickey Mantle.
Teams Played For: Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics (1949–1956), New York Yankees (1957–1960), Pittsburgh Pirates (1961), Houston Colt .45s (1962), St. Louis Cardinals (1962–1964), Chicago Cubs (1964), Philadelphia Phillies (1964).
Career Totals: 119–99 Record, 3.38 ERA, 1,072 Strikeouts, 484 Games.
Accolades: 1952 AL MVP, 3-time All-Star (1951, 1952, 1957), 8-time Gold Glove Winner, 1958 World Series Champion.

Did You Know? Though a severe arm injury in 1953 limited his explosive velocity, Shantz reinvented himself as a master craftsman. He was traded to the New York Yankees in 1957, leading the AL in ERA (2.45) that season and helping anchors Bronx pennant runs in 1957, 1958, and 1960.
Shantz is widely considered one of the greatest fielding pitchers in the history of the sport. He won the first eight Gold Glove Awards ever handed out to an AL pitcher (1957–1964), moving seamlessly from the Yankees to the Pirates, Colt .45s, and Cardinals while continuing to secure the hardware.
