William Lester “Billy” DeMars (nicknamed “Kid”) occupies a fascinating space in post-war baseball history. While his major league playing career was brief, spanning just 80 games over three seasons, he became an institution in the sport as a legendary, long-serving minor league manager and major league coach whose career in uniform spanned more than half a century.
Originally signed by his hometown Brooklyn Dodgers during World War II, DeMars was blocked in a loaded Brooklyn system and was eventually selected by the Philadelphia Athletics in the 1947 Rule 5 draft.
DeMars saw his most extensive major league action after being acquired by the St. Louis Browns. In 1950, he served as a valuable utility infielder, playing 61 games at shortstop and third base while hitting .247 with 22 walks and 13 RBIs
He finished his big-league playing career after a brief cup of coffee in 1951, retiring from the majors with a lifetime .237 batting average. However, he remained a highly productive minor league mainstay, racking up over 1,100 hits at the AAA level before hanging up his spikes in 1960.

Did You Know? While his playing statistics were modest, DeMars possessed a brilliant baseball mind that immediately translated to coaching. After managing in the minor leagues for a decade, he was hired as a major league coach for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1969.
DeMars became an absolute fixture on the Phillies’ bench, serving as the third base coach and hitting instructor for 19 consecutive seasons (1969–1981). He was an instrumental coaching staff anchor for the iconic 1980 World Series Champion Phillies team, working closely with Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt and hit king Pete Rose.
