Ralph “The Major” Houk (1919–2010) is a legendary figure in New York Yankees lore. While he spent eight seasons in the majors as a backup catcher behind Yogi Berra, his true legacy was cemented in the dugout.
Houk earned his nickname, “The Major,” during World War II, where he served with immense bravery in the U.S. Army. He rose from private to major, fought at the Battle of the Bulge, and was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart.
When he returned to baseball, his strong leadership skills translated perfectly to management. After serving as a coach, he succeeded Casey Stengel as Yankees manager in 1961, leading the team to three straight AL Pennants and back-to-back World Series titles (1961 and 1962).
The 1961 Juggeranaut: In his rookie managerial year, Houk skippered the historic 1961 Yankees—famous for the M&M Boys (Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris) chasing Babe Ruth’s home run record—to 109 wins and a World Series ring.
A Champion Leader: He won the Fall Classic again in 1962, defeating the San Francisco Giants in a classic 7-game battle.
A Long-Term Dugout Icon: Houk managed for 20 seasons across three historic franchises: the Yankees (1961–1963, 1966–1973), the Detroit Tigers (1974–1978), and the Boston Red Sox (1981–1984), compiling 1,619 career victories.
Career Statistics (As a Player): Because Yogi Berra was a perennial MVP candidate who caught almost every game, Houk’s on-field playing appearances were highly limited, but he was a respected clubhouse leader.
