George “Big George” Crowe (1921–2011) was a highly respected, exceptionally powerful first baseman who carved out a unique space in both professional baseball and basketball history.
Crowe was a phenomenal multi-sport athlete. He was named Indiana’s very first “Mr. Basketball” in 1939 and later played professional basketball with the Los Angeles Red Devils (alongside Jackie Robinson) and the Harlem Globetrotters. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Crowe joined the New York Black Yankees of the Negro National League before finally getting his opportunity in integrated Major League Baseball.
Because of the color barrier and his military service, Crowe did not make his Major League debut until 1952 with the Boston Braves, when he was already 31 years old.
Boston to Milwaukee Transition: Crowe played for the Braves during their final year in Boston (1952) and their historic move to Milwaukee (1953). Though highly productive, he spent much of his Braves tenure as a luxury bench bat behind future Hall of Fame first baseman Joe Adcock.
The 1957 Cincinnati Breakout: Traded to the Cincinnati Redlegs (Reds), Crowe finally got his chance to play everyday in 1957 when Ted Kluszewski went down with a back injury. Crowe responded with a massive season, hitting 31 home runs, driving in 92 runs, and batting a stellar .271.
The Ultimate Pinch-Hitter: As his career progressed, Crowe became one of the most feared pinch-hitters in baseball history. When he retired, his 14 career pinch-hit home runs were a Major League record (since broken). He spent his final three seasons as a crucial veteran leader for the powerhouse late-50s and early-60s St. Louis Cardinals.
