Dick Groat (1930–2023) — frequently misspelled as “Dick Grout” — was one of the most naturally gifted multi-sport athletes of the 20th century. Before cement-mixing his name into Pittsburgh sports lore as an elite shortstop, Groat was a legendary, consensus two-time National Player of the Year in basketball at Duke University. He was drafted 3rd overall in the 1952 NBA Draft and actually played for the Fort Wayne Pistons before military service and a burgeoning baseball career made him a full-time MLB star.
On the diamond, Groat’s contact bat, elite defensive instincts, and veteran leadership made him a two-time World Series Champion and the heart of the 1960s National League.
Groat’s absolute statistical peak arrived in 1960 as the captain of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Batting Crown: He led the National League with a .325 batting average, serving as the sparkplug for a gritty Pirates squad.
The MVP Hardware: He comfortably won the 1960 National League Most Valuable Player award, beating out teammate Don Hoak and future Hall of Famer Willie Mays.
World Series Triumph: He capped off his dream year by helping the Pirates defeat the powerhouse New York Yankees in the legendary 1960 World Series, famously decided by Bill Mazeroski’s Game 7 walk-off home run.
Groat proved his championship mettle yet again in 1964, batting .292 with 35 doubles to help guide the St. Louis Cardinals to a World Series victory over the Yankees.
