Samuel “Toothpick” Jones (1925–1971) was one of the most intimidating and historically significant pitchers of the 1950s. Standing 6’4″ with a blazing fastball and a sweeping curveball that legend Stan Musial once called the best he ever saw, Jones was a dominant, albeit wild, force on the mound.
He earned his nickname because he was rarely seen on the field without a flat toothpick dangling from his lips. In 1955, while pitching for the Chicago Cubs, “Toothpick” Sam etched his name into baseball lore by becoming the first Black pitcher in Major League history to throw a no-hitter.
AL History Maker (1952): Early in his career with the Cleveland Indians, Jones teamed up with veteran Negro League catcher Quincy Trouppe to form the first all-Black starting battery in American League history.
The Wild No-Hitter (May 12, 1955): Jones’ no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates is one of the most dramatic ever pitched. Entering the 9th inning, he walked the first three batters to load the bases with nobody out. Undeterred, he struck out the next three batters in a row—including Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente—to seal the 4-0 masterpiece.
A “Black Ace” in 1959: His finest season came with the San Francisco Giants in 1959, when he went 21-15 with a league-leading 2.83 ERA and 209 strikeouts. He won NL Pitcher of the Year honors and became one of the original “Black Aces” (Black pitchers to win 20 games in a season).
