Ed “Eddie” Mathews was an American professional baseball third baseman who is widely regarded as one of the greatest power hitters and third basemen in the history of the sport. His career spanned 17 seasons from 1952 to 1968, playing for the Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, Houston Astros, and Detroit Tigers.

Mathews formed a legendary offensive tandem with fellow Hall of Famer Hank Aaron in Milwaukee. Together, they are one of the most prolific home run-hitting duos in baseball history. Mathews was a key player on the 1957 Milwaukee Braves team that won the World Series against the New York Yankees. He hit a crucial game-winning home run in the 10th inning of Game 4. On July 14, 1967, Mathews became the seventh player in MLB history to join the 500 home run club, and just the second third baseman to achieve the milestone.

Mathews has a variety of accolades including being a 12-time All-Star, 2-time World Series Champion: (1957 with the Milwaukee Braves, 1968 with the Detroit Tigers), and a 2-time NL Home Run Leader: (1953, 1959).

After his playing days, Mathews served as a coach and manager. He managed the Atlanta Braves from 1972 to 1974. He was the manager of the team on April 8, 1974, when Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run to break Babe Ruth’s all-time record.

Ed Mathews was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978 on his fifth ballot. He was also inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame 1999. His jersey number, 41, was retired by the Atlanta Braves in 1969.
