Wilmer “Vinegar Bend” Mizell (1930–1999) was one of the most colorful and unique figures of 1950s baseball. A hard-throwing left-handed pitcher, Mizell earned his famous nickname from his tiny hometown of Vinegar Bend, Alabama.
With a booming voice, deep Southern drawl, and a blazing fastball, he spent nine seasons in the major leagues (most notably with the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates) before transitioning into a highly successful second career in United States politics, serving three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Mizell was signed by the Cardinals in 1949 and quickly gained a reputation for having a devastating fastball paired with a wild streak that kept hitters on their toes.
After several highly productive years as a mainstay in the Cardinals’ starting rotation, Mizell was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates mid-season in 1960. He proved to be a vital acquisition, going 13–5 with a 3.12 ERA down the stretch to help propel Pittsburgh to the NL Pennant and a historic World Series victory over the New York Yankees.
Like many stars of the era, Mizell’s baseball prime was interrupted by military service; he missed the entire 1954 and 1955 seasons due to serving in the U.S. Army.
