Cliff Lee is a former MLB left-handed starting pitcher who, at his peak, was arguably the most dominant and efficient strike-thrower in baseball. Lee’s career is defined by a legendary “second act” where he transformed from a struggling starter into a Cy Young winner and postseason hero.
Lee played 13 seasons in the majors. He was famously part of the 2002 trade that sent Bartolo Colon from Montreal to Cleveland, a deal that is now considered one of the most lopsided in baseball history.
In 2007, Lee was so ineffective (6.29 ERA) that he was sent down to the minor leagues. However, he returned in 2008 with a revamped approach, winning the AL Cy Young Award with one of the greatest pitching seasons of the 21st century.
Lee became a legendary figure in the playoffs, known for his “ice-cold” demeanor. In the 2009 postseason with the Phillies, he went 4–0 with a 1.56 ERA. One of his most iconic moments was a nonchalant, “no-look” catch of a pop-up during Game 1 of the 2009 World Series, perfectly illustrating his calm under pressure.
Unlike many former stars who become coaches or broadcasters, Cliff Lee essentially disappeared from the public eye after his final game in 2014. He officially retired in 2016 and returned to Arkansas.
