Marquis Grissom is one of only a few players in MLB history to record 2,000+ hits, 200+ home runs, and 400+ stolen bases (joining legends like Rickey Henderson, Barry Bonds, and Joe Morgan).
In one of the most iconic moments in Atlanta sports history, it was the “hometown kid” who caught the final fly ball in center field to secure the 1995 World Series title. Grissom holds a career .317 postseason batting average and once had a 15-game World Series hitting streak, second only to Hank Bauer of the Yankees.
Before he became a power-hitting veteran, Grissom was a “gazelle” on the basepaths and a vacuum in the outfield for the Montreal Expos. He led the National League in steals back-to-back in 1991 (76) and 1992 (78). He won four consecutive Gold Gloves (1993–1996) for his defense in center field.
Grissom was a central figure on the 1994 Montreal Expos, the team many believe would have won the World Series if the player strike hadn’t canceled the season. Along with Larry Walker and Moisés Alou, Grissom was part of perhaps the greatest “lost” dynasty in baseball history.
Grissom has remained a massive figure in the Atlanta community through the Marquis Grissom Baseball Association, which helps underprivileged youth with both baseball and academics.
