In 1996, Martinez faced one of the most daunting tasks in sports history: replacing the retiring Yankees captain and icon, Don Mattingly, at first base. After a slow start that saw him booed by fans, he eventually won over the Bronx with his work ethic and power. He didn’t just replace a legend; he helped lead the team to a World Series title in his very first year (1996), the Yankees’ first since 1981.
While Derek Jeter earned the “Mr. November” nickname in the 2001 World Series, it wouldn’t have been possible without Tino. In Game 4, with the Yankees down to their final out in the bottom of the 9th, Martinez hit a dramatic two-run, game-tying home run off Arizona Diamondbacks closer Byung-Hyun Kim. The bat he used for that home run is now enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Martinez has several accolades including 2-time All-Star; 1997 Home Run Derby Champion and Silver Slugger (1997), Monument Park Honoree (2014).
Since retiring after the 2005 season, Martinez has remained active in the baseball world. He served as the hitting coach for the Miami Marlins (2013) and has been a volunteer assistant for the University of South Florida. He has worked as a color commentator for the YES Network and an analyst for ESPN’s Baseball Tonight.
The Tino Martinez Award is presented annually to the most outstanding NCAA Division II baseball player, honoring his own legendary college career at the University of Tampa.
