McDowell was a key figure in the Mets’ bullpen during their dominant run in the mid-to-late 1980s. Over his career, he played for the Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers, and Baltimore Orioles.

McDowell’s most famous season came in 1986, when he went 14–9 with 22 saves and a 3.02 ERA. He was a crucial part of the Mets’ championship run.

He pitched five scoreless innings of relief in a 16-inning marathon during NLCS Game 6 against the Houston Astros, a performance many credit with saving the season.

In World Series Game 7 McDowell was the winning pitcher in the decisive game against the Boston Red Sox, entering in the seventh inning as the Mets staged a comeback to secure the title.

Beyond his pitching, McDowell was legendary as the “class clown” and premier prankster of the 1986 Mets.

After being traded to the Phillies in 1989 (in the deal that sent Lenny Dykstra to Philadelphia and Juan Samuel to New York), McDowell continued to be an effective closer, recording 22 saves in 1990. Following his retirement as a player, he transitioned into a long and successful career as a pitching coach, most notably spending a decade with the Atlanta Braves (2006–2016).
