Overview of 1985 Fleer Baseball Cards
The 1985 Fleer baseball card set is a significant part of the “junk wax” era of card collecting and is highly regarded for its fantastic rookie class and distinctive design. It’s often collected alongside its contemporaries, the 1985 Topps and 1985 Donruss sets.
Set Design and Features: The 1985 Fleer set consists of 660 standard-sized cards. The design is recognizable for its team-colored borders that surround a full-color player photo. These borders often show signs of wear and chipping, making it difficult to find high-grade examples. The player’s name and position are displayed in a banner across the top of the card. The set also included stickers in wax packs, a common feature of Fleer sets from this period.
The checklist for the set is organized by team based on their standings from the previous season, and then alphabetically by the player’s last name. This made it easier for collectors to organize their sets. The card backs have a red and black design with player information, yearly and career statistics, and a “Did you know?” trivia section.
“In Action” cards: Cards showcasing players in the middle of a play.
Team Stickers: As was common with Fleer sets, packs included team logo stickers.
Super Star Specials: Cards featuring multiple star players or a significant moment in baseball history.
Major League Prospects: Cards highlighting two rookies per card.
Key Rookie Cards: The 1985 Fleer set is most famous for its outstanding class of rookie cards, many of which are considered essential for collectors of the era. The most important rookie cards in the set include:
- Roger Clemens (#155): This is one of the most popular rookie cards for the seven-time Cy Young Award winner.
- Kirby Puckett (#286): A key rookie card for the Hall of Fame outfielder.
- Dwight Gooden (#82): Gooden’s rookie card was a hot commodity at the time, given his legendary 1984 rookie season.
- Eric Davis (#533): The rookie card of the exciting power/speed threat.
- Orel Hershiser (#371): The rookie card of the dominant pitcher who would go on to win a Cy Young and a World Series MVP.
