Drafted 6th overall in 1981 out of the University of Arkansas, McReynolds didn’t take long to make an impact. In just his first full season, he helped lead the Padres to their first-ever World Series. He hit 20 home runs that year and provided the defensive stability in center field that allowed the Padres’ veteran lineup to thrive.
Along with Tony Gwynn and Steve Garvey, McReynolds formed a formidable core in San Diego before being traded to the Mets in a blockbuster eight-player deal in late 1986.
In 1988 McReynolds hit .288 with 27 home runs and 99 RBIs. Most impressively, he went 21-for-21 in stolen base attempts—setting a then-Major League record for the most steals in a season without being caught. He finished third in the NL MVP voting, trailing only Kirk Gibson and Darryl Strawberry.
McReynolds was famously immune to the “Big Apple” pressure. He didn’t seek the spotlight and was often criticized by the New York media for his perceived lack of emotion. He treated baseball with a professional, blue-collar detachment. He was rarely seen at post-game parties, often preferring to head home immediately to prepare for his true passion: duck hunting and fishing.
From 1984 to 1991, you could pencil him in for exactly 20 to 25 home runs and 80 to 90 RBIs. He was the rare power hitter who rarely struck out and played high-end defense, winning a Fielding Bible-style reputation long before the award existed.
Career Highlights:
- Teams: San Diego Padres (1983–1986), New York Mets (1987–1991, 1994), Kansas City Royals (1992–1993).
- The Stat Line: Finished with 211 career home runs, 807 RBIs, and a solid .265 lifetime average.
- Mets Hall of Fame Tier: He remains in the top 10 in many offensive categories for the Mets franchise, including home runs and RBIs.
