Drafted 6th overall by the Mariners in 1982 out of the University of Texas (where he was a college legend), Owen was fast-tracked to the big leagues. He stabilized a young Mariners infield, showing off the range and sure hands that would keep him in the majors for over a decade.
In 1986, Owen was sent to the Boston Red Sox mid-season alongside Dave Henderson in a trade that fundamentally changed the trajectory of the AL Pennant race. Owen’s arrival in Boston was the missing piece for a team destined for the World Series. He immediately took over the starting shortstop job and became a cult hero at Fenway Park. In Game 2 of the 1986 ALCS against the Angels, Owen tied a postseason record by scoring four runs in a single game.
After his stint in Boston, Owen moved to the Montreal Expos, where he enjoyed some of the best offensive seasons of his career.
In 1993, the Yankees signed him to be their veteran bridge at shortstop. While his time in the Bronx was short, he provided the defensive leadership that helped stabilize a clubhouse featuring a young Bernie Williams and Paul O’Neill.
Spike Owen played for several teams including Seattle Mariners (1983–1986), Boston Red Sox (1986–1988), Montreal Expos (1989–1992), New York Yankees (1993) and California Angels (1994–1995).
