Sid Fernandez was one of the most enigmatic and dominant left-handers of the 1980s. While teammate Dwight Gooden brought the “Doctor K” hype, Fernandez was often the pitcher opponents dreaded facing most due to a deceptive delivery and a “rising” fastball that seemed to defy gravity.
Fernandez’s success was built on a unique mechanics profile. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii (and famously wearing #50 in honor of the 50th state), he utilized a short-arm, “shot-put” style delivery that made it nearly impossible for hitters to pick up the ball.
While he was a 16-game winner during the regular season, Fernandez’s most legendary moment came in relief during Game 7 of the 1986 World Series. Entering the game in the 4th inning with the Mets trailing 3–0, “El Sid” completely shut down the Red Sox. He struck out the side in the 4th and ended up pitching 2.1 hitless innings.
He earned All-Star nods in 1986 and 1987, firmly establishing himself as one of the elite lefties in the National League alongside Steve Carlton and Fernando Valenzuela.
Fernandez eventually moved on to the Orioles and Phillies, but his peak years in New York remain his legacy.
