Greg Gagne was the quintessential “glue guy” for the Minnesota Twins during their golden era. While he rarely saw his name in the headlines alongside stars like Kirby Puckett or Kent Hrbek, his steady glove and knack for timely postseason hits made him indispensable to two World Series titles.

Despite recording a staggering 19.1 career defensive WAR—a number higher than several Hall of Famers—Gagne famously never won a Gold Glove. Many attribute this to his “quiet” style and the fact that he shared an era with flashier defenders like Alan Trammell and Cal Ripken Jr.

In a rare display of speed and luck, Gagne once hit two inside-the-park home runs in a single game (October 4, 1986, against the White Sox), a feat that remains one of the most statistically improbable events in Twins history.

He signed a major free-agent deal with Kansas City in 1993 and immediately became their Player of the Year. He posted a career-high 32 doubles that season and finished 22nd in MVP voting.

He finished his career in Los Angeles (1996–1997), providing a steady veteran presence for a young Dodgers infield. Even at age 35, he remained a positive asset in the field.

Career Highlights:

  • 2x World Series Champion: 1987 and 1991 (Twins).
  • Twins Hall of Fame: Inducted in 2010 as one of the franchise’s all-time greatest infielders.
  • Ironman Quality: From 1986 to 1992, he averaged nearly 145 games per season, serving as the reliable “everyday” man for Tom Kelly’s squad.
