Before he was a New York legend, Teufel was a standout for the Minnesota Twins. He brought a peculiar, hip-wiggling pre-pitch routine—dubbed the “Teufel Shuffle”—that became his trademark. In 1984 his first full season, he hit 14 home runs and 30 doubles, finishing 4th in the AL Rookie of the Year voting (ironically, finishing just behind his future teammate Kirby Puckett).
In late 1985, Teufel was traded to the Mets in a deal that sent Billy Beane to Minnesota. In Queens, he formed one half of the most effective second-base platoons in baseball history with Wally Backman. Teufel’s connection to the Mets lasted decades beyond his playing days, transitioning from a reliable infielder to a respected teacher.
He spent years as the Mets’ third base coach (2012–2016), where he was well-regarded for his use of analytics and his work as the team’s infield instructor. He managed various Mets affiliates, including the Brooklyn Cyclones and the Buffalo Bisons, helping develop the next generation of New York talent.
He was a rare middle infielder of his era who prioritized walks and on-base percentage, making him a precursor to the modern “Moneyball” style of hitter.
