Tony Fernandez was the embodiment of grace at shortstop. Known for his unorthodox underhanded throws and incredible range, he was the heart of the Toronto Blue Jays’ infield for most of the 1980s and 90s. He played the game with a quiet brilliance, combining elite defense with a switch-hitting bat that remained productive into his late 30s.
Fernandez won four straight Golden Glove awards from 1986 to 1989, a period where he was widely considered the AL’s defensive answer to Ozzie Smith.
A famous Sports Illustrated quote described his range as legendary. In 1986, he set a then-MLB record for shortstops with 213 hits in a single season, proving he was just as dangerous with the bat as he was with the glove.
After being traded away in the blockbuster deal that brought Roberto Alomar and Joe Carter to Toronto, Fernandez returned via trade in mid-1993. He was a postseason force, batting .333 with 9 RBIs in the World Series to help the Jays repeat as champions.
Fernandez was respected as much for his character as his play. A deeply religious and humble man, he earned the nickname “Professor Gadget” for his fitness-focused approach to the game. Even at age 37 in 1999, he hit .328 and earned his fifth All-Star selection, showing that his “slap-hitter” approach and high baseball IQ were timeless.
Fernandez passed away in 2020 at the age of 57 following complications from polycystic kidney disease. His death was met with an outpouring of grief from across the baseball world, particularly in Canada and his native Dominican Republic. His #1 is honored on the Blue Jays’ Level of Excellence at the Rogers Centre.
