While injuries eventually slowed his trajectory, Austin Kearns began his career as one of the most hyped outfield prospects of the late 1990s. The Cincinnati Reds selected him seventh overall in the 1998 draft, and he quickly justified that pick by dominating the minor leagues.
Kearns arrived in the Major Leagues in 2002 and immediately lived up to the billing. He posted a .315 batting average with 13 home runs in just 107 games, finishing third in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. Alongside Adam Dunn, Kearns formed a formidable young duo that Reds fans viewed as the future of the franchise.
In 2003, he famously hit the first-ever home run at Great American Ball Park. However, a severe shoulder injury resulting from a home-plate collision that same year began a cycle of physical setbacks.
Kearns transitioned into a valuable veteran bench piece and occasional starter for several clubs late in his career:
- Cleveland Indians (2010, 2011): He enjoyed a late-career resurgence in 2010, hitting .272 before a mid-season trade.
- New York Yankees (2010): He joined the Yankees for their postseason run, providing depth in the outfield.
- Miami Marlins (2012–2013): He finished his playing days in Miami, notably leading the Major Leagues in pinch-hit walks during the 2012 season.
Kearns officially retired in 2013 with 121 career home runs and nearly 500 RBIs.
