Manufacturer: (Topps) Bowman
Set Size: 440 Cards
Card Size: 2-1/2” x 3-1/2”
Set Notes: Similar to other Bowman baseball card sets from this time period, the 1999 set focuses heavily on rookies and prospects. The card fronts showcase a player action photo, team logo in the lower left corner and the Bowman logo in blue foil top left. The players name is in foil on the bottom over a rich wood grain black background. The cards included a facsimile signature of the player on the right border. Backs include a headshot of the player along with stats and player data. Both this 1999 and the previous 1998 year Bowman cards have a similar design.

Overview of 1999 Bowman Baseball Cards
The 1999 Bowman Baseball card set is notable for being a product of the late 1990s collecting boom and is often remembered as part of the lineage that established Bowman as the premier brand for rookie and prospect cards.
Dual Checklist: The 1999 Bowman release was issued in two series and featured a substantial checklist composed of both current MLB Veterans and Rookies and a separate, larger group of Prospects. This dual structure is a hallmark of the Bowman brand.
Parallel Cards: A variety of parallel cards were available for the base set and prospect cards, providing collectors with chases for limited-edition versions.
International Parallels: These parallels were available in the base and prospect sections.
Gold Parallels: These were serial-numbered to a relatively low print run of /99 for the base set, adding significant scarcity.
Bowman Chrome: As with most modern Bowman releases, a parallel set, 1999 Bowman Chrome, was also produced, offering a more premium, chromium-stock version of the checklist with its own distinct Refractor parallels (Refractor, International Refractor /100, and Gold Refractor /25).
(Rookiecardprices.com only shows values for regular base set cards. No prices are shown for errors, parallels, subsets, misprints or other cards unless noted.)
Key Rookie and Prospect Cards: The long-term value of the 1999 Bowman and Bowman Chrome sets is largely driven by the strong class of future stars that appeared as Rookie Cards (RCs) or Prospect Cards in the set.
- C.C. Sabathia: His cards, especially the 1999 Bowman Chrome Rookie Card and its scarce Refractor parallels (like the Gold Refractor /25), are among the most sought-after in the set.

Notable Inserts and Autographs: Beyond the base and parallel cards, the set included various inserts, though it’s important to differentiate between the standard Bowman and the premium Bowman Chrome release.
Autographs: Autographed cards of prospects were included, which are now highly coveted, especially for players who went on to have successful MLB careers. The Bowman Chrome Autographs are generally more valuable due to the card stock and Refractor parallels.
Other Inserts: The set featured various insert sets, such as Scout’s Choice and Impact (in Bowman Chrome), which are popular for their design and the inclusion of top players and prospects.
Condition Sensitivity: Like all chrome-stock cards from this era, the Bowman Chrome Refractor parallels are sensitive to surface wear and centering issues, making high-graded copies (PSA 10, BGS 9.5 or better) of the key rookies/prospects exceptionally valuable.
Modern Relevancy: Topps has paid homage to this set, as seen in the 2024 Bowman Chrome release, which included a 1999 Bowman Chrome 25th Anniversary insert set, a testament to the original design’s lasting appeal.
In summary, the 1999 Bowman Baseball set holds an important place in the collecting world, offering a mix of paper and premium chrome cards (via Bowman Chrome) that contains the desirable first cards of multiple significant MLB players, with the scarcest parallel cards commanding the highest prices.
