Jarrod Washburn built a 12-season Major League career as a reliable, crafty left-handed starting pitcher. Emerging from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh, where he won a Division III national title, the Angels selected him 31st overall in the 1995 draft.
Washburn debuted with the Anaheim Angels in 1998 and earned a permanent rotation spot by 2001. He reached his professional ceiling during the historic 2002 World Series season, serving as the team’s undisputed ace.
His 2002 campaign ranks among the best in franchise history:
- Cy Young Contender: He won 18 games against just 6 losses, posting a .750 winning percentage.
- Elite Metrics: He registered a .315 ERA over 206 innings, finishing fourth in the American League Cy Young Award voting.
- Champion Status: He made five starts during the 2002 postseason run, helping Anaheim secure its first-ever World Series title.
In December 2005, Washburn signed a lucrative four-year contract with the Seattle Mariners. He brought durability to the Pacific Northwest, regularly pacing the club in starts and innings pitched.
With his trade value at an all-time high, Seattle sent Washburn to the Detroit Tigers mid-way through the 2009 season to aid their playoff push. He completed his final big-league appearances in Detroit before retiring from professional baseball.
