Sean Casey is an American former professional baseball player who played primarily as a first baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB) for twelve seasons.
He is widely known by the nickname “The Mayor,” which he reportedly earned during his time with the Double-A Akron Aeros. The nickname stems from his reputation for casually chatting with every runner who made it to first base. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the second round (53rd overall selection) of the 1995 MLB Draft out of the University of Richmond.
Casey played for five teams during his MLB career:
- Cleveland Indians (1997)
- Cincinnati Reds (1998–2005)
- Pittsburgh Pirates (2006)
- Detroit Tigers (2006–2007)
- Boston Red Sox (2008)
Casey has many key career achievements and honors. He is a 3-time MLB All-Star (1999, 2001, 2004), he is part of the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and is the 1999 Hutch Award Winner. This award is given to the player who personifies the spirit, courage, and integrity of former manager Fred Hutchinson.
Sean Casey is the only player to record the first-ever hit at two major league ballparks: Miller Park and PNC Park, doing so within three days in 2001. His best individual season was arguably 1999, where he batted .332 with 25 home runs, 99 RBI, and 103 runs scored.
Following his playing career, Casey became a broadcaster and commentator for the MLB Network. He also served as the hitting coach for the New York Yankees in 2023.
