Juan Rivera brought a potent combination of raw power, a quick bat, and an exceptionally strong throwing arm to the outfield throughout his 13-year Major League career. Signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela in 1996, Rivera ascended through the minor leagues as a highly touted prospect.
The New York Yankees and “The Trade” (2001–2003)
Rivera debuted for the Yankees in 2001 and quickly earned a spot in their outfield rotation. In 2003, he hit a crisp .266 with 7 home runs in just 57 games, showing flashes of his offensive upside. His performance caught the attention of teams across the league, and in December 2003, the Yankees included him in a blockbuster trade package to the Montreal Expos for All-Star pitcher Javier Vázquez.
After just one season in Montreal, Rivera headed to the Anaheim Angels prior to the 2005 season. He enjoyed the finest years of his career in Southern California, turning into a middle-of-the-order threat and a fan favorite.
Rivera continued to provide veteran pop late in his career, transitioning to the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2011. He played an important role for the Dodgers, starting at both first base and left field while hitting .258 with 9 home runs in 2012. He concluded his major league playing career with the New York Yankees in 2013, returning full circle to the organization that first signed him.
