Denny Riddleberger was a highly dependable left-handed relief specialist who carved out a short but statistically impressive career in the early 1970s.
Originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1967 out of Old Dominion University, Riddleberger was traded to the Washington Senators in August 1970 for veteran pitcher George Brunet. He made his big-league debut just a few weeks later.
The Washington Relief Work (1970–1971): Riddleberger was excellent right out of the gate, giving up just one earned run across 9.1 innings in his late 1970 cameo. In 1971—the Senators’ final season in Washington before relocating to become the Texas Rangers—he was the team’s ultimate workhorse out of the bullpen. He appeared in 57 games, tossing 69.2 innings with a strong 3.23 ERA and securing his lone career Major League save.
The Cleveland Transition (1972): Prior to the 1972 season, he was traded to the Cleveland Indians. He put together the most efficient stretch of his career in Cleveland, posting a sparkling 2.50 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP over 38 relief appearances (54.0 innings).
