Grieve was originally selected 6th overall in the 1st round of the 1966 MLB Draft by the Washington Senators out of Pittsfield High School. He made his big-league debut with the Senators in 1970, meaning he was part of the franchise’s historic relocation to Texas in 1972 to become the Rangers.
As a player, Grieve was a right-handed outfielder who packed legitimate over-the-fence pop. His absolute peak performance on the field came during the 1976 season, where he put the offense on his back by smashing 20 home runs and driving in 81 runs while maintaining a .255 batting average. He was named the Rangers’ Player of the Year for his efforts.
He was traded to the New York Mets after the 1977 season as part of a massive, historic four-team blockbuster trade (which included names like Al Oliver and Jon Matlack). He finished his playing days with brief stints for the Mets and the St. Louis Cardinals, retiring with 65 career home runs.
After retiring as a player, Grieve immediately went into the front office, working his way up to become the Rangers General Manager from 1984 to 1994. As GM, he became the architect of some of the most exciting eras in team history.
He famously drafted or signed future core stars like Juan González, Rubén Sierra, Dean Palmer, and Kenny Rogers. In 1989, he made one of the most high-profile splashes in franchise history by signing legendary strikeout king Nolan Ryan to a free-agent contract.
In 1995, Grieve transitioned to the broadcast booth as the primary television color commentator for the Rangers. With his warm, deeply knowledgeable demeanor and catchphrases like “it’s high, it’s deep…”, he called games for 28 seasons until his retirement from the booth following the 2022 season. He was deservedly inducted into the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame in 2010.
