When talking about early 1970s New York Mets pitching, everyone immediately goes to Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman. But Jon Matlack completed that lethal “Big Three” rotation, throwing with a filthy left-handed velocity that often left hitters completely helpless.
Despite an even lifetime record (125-126), his career 3.18\ ERA and 1,516 strikeouts show just how dominant he was on the mound—he just routinely suffered from a brutal lack of run support from those light-hitting Mets squads.
Matlack’s official rookie card arrived in this 1971 Topps set, nestled in the tough, high-number series (#523–752). It’s a classic multi-player rookie card that he shares with pitcher Rich Folkers and infielder Ted Martinez. Because this card belongs to the legendary 1971 Topps release, finding it in top condition is an absolute nightmare for collectors.
