While he didn’t reach the same level of MLB stardom as his older brother—6-time All-Star third baseman Graig Nettles—Jim Nettles carved out a solid career as a left-handed hitting outfielder and pinch-hitter, playing across six big-league seasons and a stint in Japan.
Selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 4th round of the 1968 draft out of San Diego State University, Jim was known for a sharp eye at the plate and good defensive utility. Nettles broke into the majors with the Twins late in the 1970 season. He logged his most significant big-league action over the next two years in Minnesota.
The 1972 Outfield Rotation: He appeared in a career-high 102 games for Minnesota in 1972, showing strong patience by drawing 32 walks in 235 at-bats. Following a trade to the Detroit Tigers for the 1974 season, Nettles flashed his peak single-season power, matching his career-high with 6 home runs in just 43 games. He spent the 1975 season overseas in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) playing for the Nankai Hawks. Later in his career, he returned to the states for brief major league cameos with the Kansas City Royals (1979) and the Oakland Athletics (1981).
Jim Nettles shares this Twins “Rookie Stars” card with Pete Hamm.
