Strohmayer was originally selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 26th round of the 1968 MLB Draft out of the University of the Pacific. However, his big-league breakthrough came with the young expansion franchise, the Montreal Expos, where he made his debut in April 1970.
He pitched for Montreal until mid-1973, when he was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets. He made a handful of appearances for the 1973 “Ya Gotta Believe” Mets squad that won the National League pennant and wrapped up his major league career with New York in 1974.
His most productive statistical season came in 1971 with the Expos, where he threw a career-high 114.0 innings, notched 7 wins, tossed 2 complete games, and struck out 56 batters.
Following his baseball career, Strohmayer returned to Northern California, dedicating many years to education as a school teacher and principal, and was inducted into the Pacific Athletics Hall of Fame in 1989. He passed away in November 2019 at the age of 73.
His official rookie card is this 1971 Topps #232 featuring him with the Montreal Expos. Capturing the classic, fragile black borders of the ’71 set, this card is notoriously tough to find in high-grade condition due to edge chipping.
