Before signing a professional contract, Vance built a mythic resume at Stanford University. He compiled an astonishing 32–3 career collegiate record, including an unbroken school-record 15–0 season during his sophomore year that ultimately earned him an induction into the Stanford Baseball Hall of Fame.
The Dodgers selected him in the 2nd round of the 1968 draft (Secondary Phase), right behind future franchise cornerstone Steve Garvey. By 1970, Vance had worked his way to the big leagues.
1970 Rookie Stardom: Vance enjoyed a spectacular debut season. He stepped directly into a young, talented Los Angeles rotation, compiling a 7–7 record with a crisp 3.13 ERA across 20 appearances (18 starts). His performance earned him the Dodgers Rookie of the Year honors from the organization.
The Injury Bug: Just as he was cementing his spot alongside pitchers like Don Sutton, severe shoulder and arm injuries struck during the 1971 campaign. His ERA jumped to 6.92 in limited action, and by 1973, he was forced into early retirement at just 26 years old.
