Jeff Newman was a versatile catcher and first baseman who played in the major leagues from 1976 through 1984. While he spent the majority of his career with the Oakland Athletics during a transitional period for the franchise, he was a steady presence behind the plate and a respected leader, eventually transitioning into coaching and managing later in life.
The 1979 All-Star Selection: Newman enjoyed his finest statistical season in 1979, serving as the primary catcher for the Oakland Athletics. He hit a career-high 22 home runs and drove in 60 runs. His strong first half earned him a selection as the lone representative for the Athletics in the 1979 All-Star Game at the Kingdome in Seattle.
Versatility on the Diamond: Though primarily a catcher, Newman’s athletic utility made him highly valuable to managers. Throughout his time in Oakland, he regularly filled in at first base and third base, helping solidify the infield defense during a rebuilding era for the team.
Transition to the Bench: After eight seasons with the Athletics, Newman wrapped up his playing career with the Boston Red Sox in 1984. He immediately stayed in the game after retiring, serving as a minor league manager, a major league coach for several franchises, and even stepping in as the interim manager for the Cleveland Indians for a brief period in 1997.
