Garry Templeton was a highly talented and dynamic shortstop whose major league career spanned from 1976 through 1991, primarily divided between the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Diego Padres. Known for his exceptional speed and striking athletic ability, he made a unique imprint on baseball history during the late 1970s and 1980s.
Teams: St. Louis Cardinals (1976–1981), San Diego Padres (1982–1991), New York Mets (1991)
Primary Accolades: 3× All-Star (1977, 1979, 1985), 2× Silver Slugger Award (1980, 1984), San Diego Padres Hall of Fame
Templeton achieved an unprecedented milestone in 1979 by becoming the first switch-hitter in Major League Baseball history to record 100 hits from both sides of the plate in a single season.
Following rising tensions in St. Louis regarding his fielding consistency and relationship with management, Templeton was traded to the San Diego Padres in a massive December 1981 deal that sent future Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith to the Cardinals. In San Diego, Templeton adapted his game, showing improved defensive stability. He played an integral leadership role during the Padres’ 1984 campaign, helping spark the franchise’s first-ever National League pennant.
Following his active playing career, he remained deeply tied to the sport, serving as a coach and managing multiple teams across the minor leagues and independent baseball circuits.
